CHAPTER 13

E than decided it was finally time to give up on sleep and make his way downstairs. He had spent the night tossing, turning, and crying and got very little, if any, sleep. There were too many emotions and questions flowing through his mind.

Ethan was just about to reach the bottom of the staircase, when he saw Daniel emerge from the Parlor, wiping a bit of red stuff from the side of his lip. He looked startled, when he saw Ethan standing on the stairs.

“Oh, you’re awake,” Ethan said, wiping his fingers across the back of his jeans. “It is rare that someone is able to sneak up on me.” Daniel said, with this guilty look on his face. He looked like the cat that ate the canary.

A moment later, a young man, who appeared to be in his early twenties emerged from the parlor. The man, dressed in a pair of tight blue jeans and a Dolce and Gabbana T-shirt, walked into the hallway as if he belonged in the house.

“Thanks again, love,” the man said, as he leaned in and kissed the side of Daniel’s cheek. Daniel stared at Ethan, as he listened to the sudden clench in Ethan’s heartbeat- the sound of Ethan’s heart breaking. Daniel lowered his eyes ashamed.

Ethan stood there frozen, feeling his heart breaking. The sight of Daniel emerging from the Parlor, knowing that he had shared something intimate with another man, was more than Ethan could handle. A feeling of betrayal and mistrust washed over him, making it hard for him to breathe.

The young man turned and proceeded to walk through the front door with a big smile on his face; never acknowledging the presence of Ethan standing on the staircase.

“Ethan... it’s not...” Daniel tried to say but was cut off by Ethan.

“No, it’s fine. You have to eat right? And you’re free to do whatever you want to do with these guys. We are not dating or anything,” Ethan said, as he turned the staircase and walked towards the kitchen.

Daniel listened to Ethan’s broken heart beating and knew that he had just devastated the man that he was falling in love with. He felt horrible.

Daniel followed Ethan into the kitchen, where Melanie was already waiting, sipping a cup of coffee.

“Good morning, boys,” Melanie said, leaning against the kitchen counter. “Everything OK?” she inquired, with a twisted smile on her face, suggesting that she had overheard the whole incident.

“Everything is fine,” Ethan said, as he reached for the coffee pot. As Ethan touched the pot, the coffee inside began to boil again. Damn his magic!

“Clearly,” Melanie said, sarcastically.

Ethan poured himself a cup and took a seat at the kitchen table.

“Ethan, can we talk?” Daniel said, hoping that he would be able to explain himself and earn back Ethan’s trust.

“I said I’m fine,” Ethan said, a little louder than he intended.

Daniel took a step back and Melanie let out a bit of a giggle.
